Effect of Vitamin D Supplementationon Blood Pressure
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The relationship between vitamin D supplementation and blood pressure has garnered significant attention in the academic literature, reflecting a growing interest in the potential role of vitamin D beyond its established benefits for bone health. Literature Review: Several articles contribute to the discourse, indicating that while observational studies have established a correlation between vitamin D levels and blood pressure, interventional studies yield mixed results. For instance, high-dose vitamin D supplementation showed no significant effect on blood pressure in resistant hypertension patients (Pawlicka et al., 2018), while systematic reviews indicate potential blood pressure reduction in vitamin D-deficient populations (Farapti et al., 2020). The nuanced relationship is further complicated by the mechanisms proposed for vitamin D's influence on blood pressure, such as its effects on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and endothelial function [ref: 288f4604-dcd6-4d1e-9a52-dea38e60821a; ref: 7b5cd7dd-0262-472f-bf1b-7a0aba5e1b28]. Moreover, the NHANES study data suggest that optimal vitamin D levels may mitigate age-related increases in systolic blood pressure, although vitamin D levels do not predict future hypertension (Che et al., 2023). This highlights the importance of individual patient factors, such as baseline vitamin D status and demographic variables, in understanding the effects of supplementation on blood pressure regulation. Conclusions: In conclusion, the reviewed literature indicates a need for more rigorous, well-designed randomized controlled trials to establish causality and clarify the mechanisms through which vitamin D may influence blood pressure. While there is evidence suggesting that vitamin D supplementation may lower blood pressure, particularly in deficient populations, inconsistencies in study outcomes necessitate further investigation to develop definitive guidelines for vitamin D supplementation in hypertension management.
