Analytical Evaluation of Risk Factors Associated with Dapsone Resistance in Leprosy Patients: A Systematic Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, remains a significant global health challenge, particularly due to emerging drug resistance. Understanding these resistance patterns is crucial for effective management Methods: A comprehensive search across multiple databases identified studies published in the last decade reporting on M. leprae drug resistance. Results: The review reveals a concerning prevalence of drug-resistant M. leprae strains across various regions, with significant links between resistance and treatment outcomes. Molecular analyses identified multiple mutations associated with resistance to standard treatments, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and novel therapeutic strategies. Conclusion: Findings underscore the urgent need to address drug resistance in leprosy management. Enhanced surveillance, molecular diagnostics, and updated treatment protocols are essential for controlling the disease and improving patient outcomes. Further research is needed to explore effective interventions and the impact of resistance patterns on global leprosy strategies.
