Abstract

Background: The literature consistently illustrates that obesity is a significant risk factor for adverse surgical outcomes, particularly following major abdominal surgeries. The introduction emphasizes the multifaceted implications of increased body mass index (BMI) on surgical recovery and complication rates, highlighting a strong correlation between obesity and increased postoperative complications such as wound infections and mortality. Literature Review: The systematic review by (S. Almasaudi et al., 2018) further elucidates this relationship, indicating that obesity is linked to higher rates of surgical site infections and prolonged hospital stays in colorectal cancer surgeries. The authors advocate for regular monitoring of obese patients post-surgery due to their unique physiological characteristics that can lead to poorer operative outcomes. This sentiment is echoed in the findings of (John Wilson et al., 2018), which specifically address the heightened risk of deep infections in obese patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, reinforcing the critical nature of obesity as a risk factor across various surgical contexts. Moreover, the article by (KARANTH & L. KARANTH, 2021) highlights the challenges faced by obese patients in the South Indian population, noting increased surgery durations and postoperative pain, which necessitate tailored preoperative assessments and postoperative monitoring. This need for individualized care is further emphasized in the retrospective study by (Tefera Kassahun et al., 2022), which underscores the significant complications and mortality rates associated with obesity in emergency laparotomy procedures. Conclusion: In conclusion, the body of literature reviewed indicates a clear and consistent pattern that obesity is a critical factor influencing surgical outcomes. The interplay between obesity, comorbidities, and surgical complications necessitates a nuanced understanding and proactive management strategies to optimize patient care and surgical success. Addressing obesity through preoperative weight management and tailored postoperative care is essential in improving surgical outcomes for this high-risk population.
