Abstract

Background: The literature reviewed presents a multifaceted exploration of the relationship between air pollution and respiratory infections, underscoring the importance of environmental factors in influencing respiratory health outcomes. Literature Review: The article by (Kirwa et al., 2021) provides empirical evidence from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, demonstrating that short-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution is linked with increased reports of respiratory infections. This finding reinforces the notion that even moderate variations in air quality can significantly affect the incidence of acute respiratory infections, highlighting the potential public health benefits of pollution control measures. In a scoping review, (Wrotek & Jackowska, 2022) identifies critical gaps in the literature concerning the molecular mechanisms of interaction between air pollution and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This work underlines the need for targeted research to explore how different pollutants may worsen disease outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations such as those with COPD. Finally, (J Burbank, 2023) synthesizes existing epidemiological evidence, linking air pollution exposure with increased susceptibility to respiratory infections, including those caused by SARS-CoV-2. The author emphasizes the urgency of addressing these public health challenges, particularly in the context of climate change. Conclusion: In conclusion, the collective insights from these articles highlight the critical interplay between air pollution and respiratory infections. They reveal a pressing need for ongoing research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and to inform public health strategies aimed at mitigating the adverse health effects of air pollution. The findings collectively advocate for improved air quality monitoring and intervention strategies to protect respiratory health, particularly among at-risk populations.
