Abstract

Background: The histopathology of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has garnered significant attention in recent literature, underscoring the complexities involved in its diagnosis and management. Literature Review: The examination of cytomorphological features in mixed histology BCCs reveals additional diagnostic challenges, emphasizing the importance of histopathological examination over cytology (Goyal et al., 2017). The integration of dermoscopy has also been noted as a vital tool in enhancing diagnostic accuracy, particularly for nodular BCC, the most common subtype (ENACHE et al., 2019). Dermoscopy aids in identifying clinical features that guide histopathological analysis, thereby improving early detection and treatment decisions. Further research highlights the variability in treatment responses among different histopathological subtypes of BCC (Ungureanu et al., 2021). The classification of BCC into low-risk and high-risk tumors based on clinical and pathological characteristics is crucial for effective management. Additionally, advancements in understanding BCC biology advocate for precision in morphological classification to inform treatment strategies, including the use of molecular targeting agents (Parth Naik & B. Desai, 2022). The clinical presentation of BCCs varies, with specific histological features indicating a higher risk of metastasis (Hoashi et al., 2022). Recent studies focusing on dermoscopic clues associated with aggressive BCC subtypes reinforce the necessity for meticulous surgical approaches to mitigate recurrence risks (Camela et al., 2023). Moreover, case reports emphasize the potential for misdiagnosis in aggressive subtypes, necessitating accurate histological evaluations (K Imlay et al., 2024). Conclusions: In conclusion, the literature collectively emphasizes the importance of accurate histopathological classification of BCC, the role of dermoscopy in enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and the need for tailored treatment strategies based on the tumor's biological behavior. The evolving understanding of BCC's histopathology is crucial for improving patient outcomes and guiding effective management.
