Abstract

Background: The association between Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has garnered increasing attention in the medical literature, highlighting the complex interplay between these chronic inflammatory conditions. Literature Review: The exploration of the microbiome's role in HS by (Mintoff et al., 2021) indicates that microbial interactions contribute to the disease's complexity, which may also be relevant to IBD. The case series presented by (Buchanan et al., 2022) highlights common characteristics shared by patients with both HS and Crohn's disease, including lifestyle factors like obesity and smoking, as well as potential overlaps in immunological pathways.  The multifactorial nature of HS, including its relationship with the microbiome and immune dysregulation, is underscored by (Świerczewska et al., 2022). The systematic review and meta-analysis by further elucidate the shared inflammatory pathways between HS and psoriasis, another condition frequently linked to IBD. Finally, the investigation into cellular mechanisms by (R. van Straalen et al., 2024) emphasizes the chronic inflammatory nature of HS and the need for further research into the cellular interactions within the HS microenvironment. Conclusion : In conclusion, the literature collectively illustrates that HS and IBD share significant associations characterized by common pathophysiological mechanisms, lifestyle factors, and psychological implications. The need for continued research is evident to further clarify these underlying mechanisms and improve therapeutic approaches for patients suffering from both conditions.
